During the latter part of 2004, two local youth workers approached interested parties within the community, and other relevant external agencies with the idea of developing the existing Somerset County Council youth services for young people in Dulverton and Southern Exmoor. A planning meeting was held, and from this, Dulverton and District Young People’s Project was formed as a voluntary organisation at the beginning of 2005. In early 2006 DDYPP officially achieved charitable status.
DDYPP was set up with the aim of increasing social and learning opportunities for rurally disadvantaged young people and to enable them to have access to a wider range of support services, projects and activities.
DDYPP, now known as Dulverton Youth Club, is based at the Riverside Youth Centre in Dulverton, a purpose built youth and community building owned by Somerset County Council. The youth club now has sole occupancy and is also the only provider of youth and community services in Dulverton following local government budgetary cuts to statutory children and young peoples services.
Dulverton Youth Club is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of local professionals, parents and community volunteers, who generously give up their time to offer their support and advice on matters such as finance, governance, as well as organisational and political strategy.
The day to day planning and running of the club is managed by a small, but experienced staff team. In 2018 the Youth Workers embarked upon a level 3 qualification in Youth Work which is ongoing. Also in 2018 an administrator was appointed to help with the general running of the club and the paperwork associated with this.
